Watch for These 5 Signs of Transmission Trouble

If you are like many people, you don't think much about your car as long as it is running properly. However, being aware of early signs of transmission trouble can help you avoid being stranded on the road. Here are some things to watch out for.

Leaks

One of the most common signs that you are having transmission problems is a leak. If you back out of your driveway or a parking lot space and see a little puddle, that could very well be transmission fluid. While you can top up the transmission fluid on your own and you can still drive around, it is best to head to the mechanic so you can have the leak fixed and the transmission checked.

Dark Transmission Fluid

If you check your oil and transmission fluid on a regular basis, you may already know that your transmission fluid is red in color and smells somewhat sweet. If you notice that the fluid is very dark or brown, there might be a problem with your car's transmission.

Burning Smell

Transmission fluid works to prevent overheating, so if you smell a burning smell, that means something has gone wrong. You may not have enough transmission fluid, which may indicate a leak, or the wrong transmission fluid is in the tank. You may not notice the burning smell until you are outside of your car.

Odd Noises in Neutral Gear

Your car may start making strange sounds if you have a number of car problems. Clunking, knocking, whining, and hissing are never good things to hear. A good way to determine if your transmission is the source of the problem is to put your car in neutral gear and listen. Typically, a car will be reasonably silent when in neutral, but if you hear excessive noises, you may very well have a transmission problem that needs to be addressed.

Problems When Shifting Gears

If you notice problems when you shift gears, that can be indicative of a transmission problem. Your car may jerk when you shift from one gear to another, or you might switch the car into drive and there is a delay. You might also notice that your car seems to slip into another gear on its own. Any gear-shifting abnormalities need to be checked out by a professional like Perfection Automotive Services.

Now that you know what to look for, you can have your transmission repaired before there is a major problem. Have a mechanic look at your car on a regular basis to address problems early.
